Title: Agroscience Research Technician

Department: Research & Development

Basic Function: The AgScience Research Technician will study and optimize ag-science products derived from Heliae algal strains. This job entails working hands-on with algae, vascular plants and other safe organic materials to help create new and improved products. This job will be focused around applications regarding fruit and vegetable crops. The associate will work with plants in a soil-based greenhouse, handle chemicals, and operate laboratory equipment/ instrumentation. Primary duties will include organizing greenhouse work space as part of a collaborative team of technicians, launching and harvesting experiments and basic data collection. This associate will comply with all Heliae laboratory safety and quality standards.

Reports to: Lead Ag Science Technician

Primary Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Daily Duties
  • Set-up and operation of experimental trials in soil platform
  • Basic understanding of experimental design
  • Conduct experiments and track daily plant growth indicators
  • Input data into Excel and compile graphs when needed
  • Perform wet chemistry techniques, including pH and salinity monitoring
  • Measuring liquid volumes and performing basic concentration conversion calculations
  • Mixing nutrient media recipes from dry chemical
  • Working with acid/base solutions
  • Maintain and update chemical inventory
  • Maintain inventory of Safety Data Sheets
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of instruments and equipment to ensure quality data
  • Comply with all job specific Standard Operating Procedures if applicable

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE III

Basic Function: The Research Associate III is responsible for safely, effectively and efficiently executing product run plans, such as testing algae, testing products or creating products; fully following Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), operating lab equipment and test stands, and keeping detailed records.  The Research Associate III will work closely with engineers and scientists to understand the product run plans and execute.

Reports to: Engineer III

Primary Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:

Operate safely, adhering to all Heliae safety protocols and practices.  Additionally, help to ensure all associates operate in the same manner.

  • Effective execution of experimental test plans is a continual requirement.
  • Maintain testing apparatus, primarily raceway ponds in R&D testing greenhouse, in a high quality and effective condition at all times, working with maintenance and other associates as necessary to achieve this task.
  • Limited troubleshooting of experimental test systems and operational methods as necessary to ensure a high quality work product is delivered at all times.
  • Sustain a well ordered and accurate Heliae Laboratory Notebook, including all details, figures and drawings as necessary.
  • Follow and adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures related to experimental test stand operations, and all other policies of the Systems and Project development group.
  • Assist in development and draft new experimental test plans as necessary.
  • Organize and maintain a clean and effective working environment in the Wetlab/South warehouse, and LP greenhouse area.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship with other associates.

Qualifications:

  • 2-5 years laboratory work experience required, with history working in biological setting preferred
  • Strong attention to detail, with ability to effectively handle changing priorities
  • Degree in an applied technology field or related technical degree (i.e. chemistry, biology, etc)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to work individually or as part of a team environment.
  • High level of drive, with initiative to continually move forward and produce effective and tangible results

SENIOR AGROSCIENCE SOIL RESEARCH SCIENTIST

Basic Function:

The Senior Agroscience Soil Research Scientist will assist with the overall planning and implementation of Heliae’s Agroscience program aimed at developing and commercializing algae-based agricultural products.

Will provide expert guidance on understanding the interactions between soil, water, plant and microalgae to enhance company position in agricultural industries worldwide.

Will interact with key agricultural community members (i.e., consultants, distributors, university & Heliae researchers, seed producers, growers, etc.) to support research trials and gather pertinent information that allows sales, research and business management to make accurate decisions and recommendations for product development and advancement.

Reports to: Manager, Ag Science & Molecular Ecology

Primary Responsibilities :

Provide technical expertise and leadership to product formulation, application testing, and experimentation designed to characterize and enhance actives in agroscience products.

Provide technical farming expertise and leadership in solving problems with microalgae solutions.

Provide key input to the design and implementation of field and greenhouse experiments via assessment of soil, water and regional considerations with various crop targets.

Manage external field trials and alignment with sales, internal testing and product development.

Design and produce data analysis of field trials including assessing soil, water, plant and regional conditions with correct testing.

Provide key information on a wide variety of crops and market needs to the product development, product testing, sales and business development teams.

Monitor and amend product development trials as necessary to achieve greatest efficacy, as well as supporting regulatory and product commercialization activities and processes.

Will perform other duties as required by the manager.

Qualifications:

  • 5 – 10 years professional experience as plant and soil scientist, or related role for the development of agricultural biotechnology.
  • 5 – 10 years commercial farm/grower experience
  • D. degree in horticulture, agronomy, soil science, plant science or related field.
  • Strong track record of scientific innovation and/or product development in agro-sciences.
  • Strong verbal and analytical skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and statistical analysis software

ANALYTICAL CHEMIST

Basic Function:

Perform a variety of analytical methods in support of production and R&D. Maintain analytical instruments, notebooks, and records as needed for analyses and data management. Document lab results and prepare analysis reports. Maintain a clean, organized, safe and efficient laboratory environment.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Comply with all Standard Operating Procedures
  • Independently conduct quantitative analyses
  • Prepare samples for analysis by performing extractions, digestions and other techniques

FERMENTATION LABORATORY LEAD AND RESEARCH SCIENTIST

Basic Function: As a key member of the corporate R&D Microbiology Team the Fermentation Laboratory Lead will be integrally involved in the development of breakthrough fermentation processes and technologies. The candidate will interact with other research scientist and production engineers to assist in the development, optimization, and transfer technology for the production of algae, in addition to contributing original ideas that could become projects. The position is a key technical position in the company and must be comfortable with scale-up and scale-down of fermentation technology.

As fermentation laboratory lead, the incumbent will be responsible to manage a fermentation research technician and train other fermenter operators. The Fermentation Laboratory Lead  will assist in the design, purchase, installation, commission and operation of the fermentation equipment (i.e. Bioflo320, gas analyzer, cedex residual analyzer, biolector robotic fermenter etc.). The Lead will establish the quality criteria to support daily fermentation test operations, which includes creating the SOPs, ordering supplies and maintaining batch records. Strong emphasis on providing data analysis and technology management is essential.

Reports to: Microbiology Manager and Principal Investigator

Supervises: Research Technicians

Activities: 

  • Assists in the design, execution and documents fermentation experiments.
  • Troubleshooting the fermenters, preventive maintenance of the equipment.
  • Collects, processes and organizes data and reports results.
  • Maintains the quality standard for fermentation testing including experimental design, data collection, maintenance of batch records and standard operating procedures.
  • Responsible for establishing high standards of excellence for fermentation and training employees, new and existing, assisting with fermentation equipment / experiments. Trains new & existing team members in fermentation.
  • As a performance related, professional growth goal after the first year, will study alternative medium sources/options, process designs and configuration schemes to support future process designs.
  • Characterize issues with the upstream processes that can impact the fermentation process. Characterizes issues with downstream processes resulting from the fermentation process. Designs and executes investigations to troubleshoot or address potential problems.
  • Searches for ways to continuously improve techniques and procedures. Drive for high degree of reproducibility, consistency and accuracy. Drive for close matching of mass, energy and stoichiometric balances where possible to ensure validity and reproducibility of results
  • Works with the R&D and production teams to identify/develop protocols, review results for anomalies and ensure analytical information is valid and useful.
  • Utilizes experience and observations to capture knowledge from experiments, communicates the knowledge to colleagues, and makes recommendations based on this knowledge.
  • Shared collaboration with microbiological team with legal counsel to protect and enrich the intellectual property portfolio of the projects.
  • Assists in the design, purchase, install, commission and operation of the fermentation equipment.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for ensuring reliable, safe, consistent and effective operation of fermentation lab equipment, including fermenters, shakers, mass spectrometers and supporting analytical equipment. Coordinate experimental programs within Microbial Biotechnology and across the organization as needed to advance technology in support of Heliae’s goals.
  • Supports the leadership and direction for development of microbiological systems technology and fermentation related to algal and cyanobacteria heterotrophic, mixotrophic and autotrophic cultures.
  • Supports the Microbiology Manager in:
    • Assisting in the investigation of the growth, structure, development, and other characteristics of microscopic organisms including bacteria and algae, and zooplankton.
    • Assists in the advance process and product technology to improve value proposition and product characteristics.
    • Assists in the preparation of literature searches in areas of interest.
    • Assists in the generation of directional experiments to estimate the potential impact on the market value of Heliae technology.
    • Assists in the design and carry out of experiments to develop technology from concept to demonstration scale.
  • Leads the development of protocols, tests and QA programs for control and monitoring of product & process development experiments in fermentation.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum BSc. in microbiology, biotechnology, biochemical engineering or related field.
