Algae Production Technician

As a key member of the manufacturing team, you will play an important role in the characterization and maintenance of algal cultures for the production and commercialization of phycological products. You will be responsible for organizing and producing various sized cultures of multiple species as part of a scale-up process. Key factors of this job include maintaining axenic cultures, establishing and following all necessary SOPs, and sustaining a clean working environment.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties may include but are not limited to: 

  1. Maintain axenic strains and apply isolation techniques when necessary
  2. Prepare media, monitor cultures, and take samples
  3. Perform laboratory analyses including microscopy
  4. Monitor laboratory inventory. Assist in preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment
  5. Troubleshoot equipment and process problems
  6. Participate in writing reports, standard operating procedures and attending any necessary meetings required
  7. Assist supervisors and managers in implementing project safety and quality assurance programs
  8. Maintain the confidentiality of proprietary company information
  9. Perform other duties as needed or directed by supervisor
  10. Maintain an effective working relationship with others

 

Qualifications:

  1. Professional with 2+ years in the area of life sciences and technology with a BS in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or Biotechnology preferred. More experienced candidates with an AA degree in biology or equivalent will be considered
  2. Experience with aseptic technique in an industrial context
  3. Ability to maintain a clearly organized laboratory notebook
  4. Fluent English written and spoken
  5. Excellent communication (written and oral), analytical and technical skills

Physical Requirements:

  1. The ability to work 40 or more hours per week at Heliae’s headquarters in Gilbert, Arizona
  2. The ability to travel to plant sites
  3. The ability to operate a: computer, telephone, fax machine/copier

 

The ability to:

  1. Walk a construction site.
  2. Sit for extended periods of time (2 hours at a time, 8 hours per day)
  3. Occasionally (0-33%) lift or carry up to 50 lbs
  4. Frequently (34%-66%) perform fine manipulations with hands and fingers
  5. See, hear, and speak

Field Operator

Performs daily tasks to support the production and processing of algae on site, and comply with all Heliae’s safety standards.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties may include but are not limited to:  

Daily Work

Sampling

  1. Obtain samples site-wide for analysis
  2. Calibrate lab and field probes to ensure proper function
  3. Measure pH, temperature of algal reactors
  4. Qualitative and quantitative monitoring of algal cultivation systems

Data Entry

  1. Input all necessary data values regarding various field duties
  2. Maintain a log of activities in the field

Field Operator Duties

  1. Harvest, clean, and fill algae reactors
  2. Adjust control points to reach targeted set points.
  3. Assist in daily algae growth and processing areas
  4. Complete daily tasks efficiently and in a timely manner
  5. Learn normal operations and report any variances
  6. Maintain a safe site
  7. Employ technical understanding to perceive and solve problems and propose potential process improvements

Housekeeping

  1. Maintain “24-hour Audit Ready” cleanliness of all Production areas
  2. Take proper steps to ensure contamination is minimized
  3. Maintain organization of all Production areas

Performs other duties as needed or directed by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  1. High School Diploma
  2. Background in Construction, Manufacturing or Biology preferred
  3. Experience with Microsoft Office including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel
