AGROSCIENCE RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

Basic Function:
The AgScience Research Technician will study and optimize ag-science products derived from Heliae algal strains. This job entails working hands-on with algae, vascular plants and other safe organic materials to help create new and improved products. This job will be focused around applications regarding fruit and vegetable crops. The associate will work with plants in a soil-based greenhouse, handle chemicals, and operate laboratory equipment/ instrumentation. Primary duties will include organizing greenhouse work space as part of a collaborative team of technicians, launching and harvesting experiments and basic data collection. This associate will comply with all Heliae laboratory safety and quality standards.

Department: Research and Development

Reports to: Ag Science Greenhouse Lead

Primary Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Set-up and operation of experimental trials in greenhouse environment
  • Basic understanding of experimental design
  • Conduct experiments and track daily plant growth indicators
  • Input data into Excel and compile graphs when needed
  • Perform wet chemistry techniques, including pH and salinity monitoring
  • Measuring liquid volumes and performing basic concentration conversion calculations
  • Mixing nutrient media recipes from dry chemical
  • Maintain and update chemical inventory
  • Maintain inventory of Safety Data Sheets
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of instruments and equipment to ensure quality data
  • Comply with all job specific Standard Operating Procedures if applicable
  • Maintain housekeeping and chemical hygiene standards
  • Assist in organizing the work area according to 5S and LEAN principals
  • Maintain laboratory “24-hour Audit Ready” cleanliness
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment at all times

PLANT PHYSIOLOGIST

Basic Function:
The Plant Physiologist will lead efforts to explore the impact of Heliae agricultural products on plant physiology and performance. He/she will assist with the overall planning and implementation of Heliae’s Agroscience program aimed at developing and commercializing algae-based agricultural products. He/she will be expected to design and conduct experiments on a wide variety of crops and with input from other sectors of the Ag Science Team as well as Product Development, Regulatory and Sales. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of high throughput product screening and plant phenotyping, and provide key insights leading to current product improvement and the formulation and development of novel product lines. The Plant Physiologist, upon conclusion of trials, will quantify the efficacy of materials with statistics in a written summation and presentation to multiple management levels, including the Board of Directors. He/she will comply with all Heliae laboratory safety and quality standards.

Department: Research and Development

Reports to: Director of Ag Science

Primary Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Lead experiments in greenhouse and laboratory designed to fully characterize the effects of Heliae’s agricultural products on plant performance
  • Translate results to support Product Development efforts
  • Coordinate experimental approaches with other members of the team (field and soil studies) in order to fully incorporate the broad learnings accomplished
  • Recommend soils, fertilizers and comparable products for testing in controlled environments
  • Perform wet chemistry techniques as needed
  • Maintain a clean “24-hour Audit Ready” work space at all times
  • Comply with all job specific Standard Operating Procedures if applicable
Qualifications:
  • 5-10 years professional experience in plant physiology, plant phenotyping and product screening
  • Ph.D. degree in botany, plant science or related field
  • Strong track record of innovation and product development in agro-sciences
  • Strong verbal and analytical skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and variety of statistical software packages

LABORATORY TECHNICIAN

Basic Function: Perform a variety of analytical methods in support of production and R&D. Maintain instruments, notebooks, and records as needed for analyses and data management. Document lab results and prepare analysis reports. Maintain a clean, organized, safe and efficient laboratory environment.

Department: Laboratory

Reports to: Laboratory Manager

Primary Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Comply with all Standard Operating Procedures
  • Perform Dry Weight and Tray weight analyses for determining culture density and sample moisture/ash content
  • Perform Nitrate and Ammonia analyses using Lachat and UV/Vis
  • Perform wet chemistry techniques as needed
  • Prepare culture media concentrates
  • Analyze data, compile properly documented data packages and utilize spreadsheets/databases to report laboratory results
  • Perform second level review of laboratory test results and documentation
  • Perform routine maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Maintain and update laboratory chemical inventory
  • Monitor quantities of chemicals and supplies in the laboratory and notify management when additional materials need to be purchased
  • Maintain inventory of Safety Data Sheets
  • Utilize good documentation practices to maintain accurate logbooks and records
  • Ensure the laboratory is clean, organized and “24-hour Audit Ready”
  • Adhere, maintain and promote a safe work environment
  • Communicate with laboratory management about bench level needs, personnel or quality issues

AGSCIENCE SOIL MICROBIOLOGIST

Basic Function:
The AgScience Soil Microbiologist will assist with the overall planning and implementation of Heliae’s Agroscience program aimed at developing and commercializing algae-based agricultural products.

Will provide expert guidance on understanding the interactions between our microalgae product and the beneficial and pathogenic soil microorganisms that impact plant productivity in order to enhance company position in agricultural industries worldwide. While a pathogenic background will be helpful to this position, we primarily seek candidates who have first hand experience working with beneficial bacteria and fungi in soils.

Will interact with key agricultural community members (i.e., consultants, distributors, university & Heliae researchers, seed producers, growers, etc.) to support research trials and gather pertinent information that allows sales, research and business management to make accurate decisions and recommendations for product development and advancement.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Provide leadership in understanding the role of our products in supporting a well-balanced soil community and plant productivity
  • Provide technical expertise and leadership to product formulation, application testing, and experimentation designed to characterize and enhance actives in agroscience products
  • Provide key input to the design and implementation of field and greenhouse experiments via assessment of soil, water and regional considerations with various crop targets
  • Provide key information on a wide variety of crops and market needs to the product development, product testing, sales and business development teams
  • Monitor and amend product development trials as necessary to achieve greatest efficacy, as well as supporting regulatory and product commercialization activities and processes
  • Will perform other duties as required
Qualifications:
  • 5 - 10 years professional experience as plant and soil microbiologist, or related role for the development of agricultural biotechnology
  • 5 – 10 years commercial farm/grower experience
  • Ph.D. degree in horticulture, agronomy, soil microbiology, plant science or related field
  • Strong track record of scientific innovation and/or product development in agro-sciences
  • Strong verbal and analytical skills with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
